Abuja kitchen where meals are served for free.
In a bid to fight hunger in Nigeria, a
humanitarian kitchen in Gwagwalada,
Abuja, has opened its doors to feed
1,000 indigent Nigerians daily and 2,000
prisoners weekly. AGBO-PAUL
AUGUSTINE was at the maiden free food
initiative of Marian Soup Kitchen at the
Kuje Medium Prison, where 824 inmates
had a good time
Located on the outskirts of Gwagwalada
on the hole-riddled Gwagwalada-Kuje
road, Marian Soup Kitchen can pass for
any regular structure on the dusty road
where little commercial activities take
place. It stands like a cottage factory
painted blue and white with a few
security personnel on guard. But beyond
the face of the structure lies a
humanitarian service that many a visitor
may ponder about.
Marian Soup Kitchen was
conceptualised, built and equipped to
feed 1,000 hungry Nigerians with rich
meals daily and 2,000 prison inmates
weekly in the Federal Capital Territory at
no cost. The only requirement is
submission for security check at the
gate, getting a card, signing in and being
seated in the massive hall that is fully
equipped like a boarding school dining
hall with a projector to show movies
while meals are served.
When LEADERSHIP Weekend visited the
site in Gwagwalada, it was breathtaking
as everything at the centre was provided
through the private effort of a
philanthropist. The first point of call for
any visitor is the reception desk where
cards are clocked in, then into the
massive, well-ventilated dining hall with
1,000 chairs arranged around tables. It
also has several toilet facilities to meet
the large number of persons expected at
the centre.
The centre has a small clinic for those
with medical needs and a counselling
unit too. It also boasts of modern cold-
rooms for raw food and drinks with a
massive, fully equipped kitchen. It has a
modern water treatment facility and a dry
food store with hostels for its workers.
The N100-million project was built for
the poor in society who are basically
faced with the challenge of feeding
themselves and with the mandate of
giving them hope.
The first Nigerians to taste the free
gesture of the kitchen were inmates of
the Kuje Medium Prison where 824
inmates had it good recently. The
Nigerian Prisons Service graciously
granted permission to the kitchen’s
request to provide free meal to inmates
in the three prisons under the FCT
Command of the service. With that
arrangement, 2,000 inmates are sure of
getting a taste of a good meal once a
week.
At the Kuje Prison, LEADERSHIP
Weekend was exclusively granted access
to witness the maiden free feeding of
inmates as all the inmates were given a
plate full of Jollof rice and beef each.
Most of the inmates couldn’t wait for the
food to reach them, as the aroma had so
aroused their taste buds that some were
practically salivating as they scrambled
through the barricade of the kitchen to
have their share.
It took extra efforts of prison wardens to
restore order as some inmates were
already going out of control. Some of the
more ‘experienced’ prison inmates had
to be drafted to assist officials of the
kitchen to serve the meal in batches of
10 plates each.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend,
some of the inmates said the food they
get in prison is a far cry from what they
ate at the kitchen. “The food is far better
than what we get in prison and that
explains why our colleagues are falling
over each other to have a good meal”,
said an inmate.
“Some of us that don’t have rich
relatives to bring food for us in prison
have to wait for opportunities like this to
have a taste of home once again.
“I can tell you, eating this meal makes
me feel like I am at home because what
we get here is of less quality. However,
the prison officials are doing their best to
make our stay worthwhile,” said another
inmate.
All the inmates had to eat the food with
bare hands as cutleries are not allowed
in prison to avoid being used as
weapons. Most of the inmates never
bothered to wash their hands before
gulping the meal whose aroma
permeated the entire prison.
After eating, none of the visitors are
expected to wash their dishes; they
simply eat and leave.
While speaking with LEADERSHIP
Weekend, the founder, Rev Fr. Willy
Ojukwu said he was motivated by the
zeal to make people happy. He said the
main objective of the gesture is the love
of humanity.
The priest believes that the world is a
“family of God” regardless of religion,
tribe or ethnic affiliations hence, he was
moved to assist the hungry by giving
them food at no cost. He said he has
been into humanitarian services since
1966 and worked to fight Kwashiorkor in
the south east during the Nigerian Civil
War.
“The place is open for everybody; any
person that is hungry is free to come to
Marian Soup Kitchen.
“After eating, all visitors to the place are
not to wash their plates; they are
expected to get up and take the exit
door. It’s as simple as that,” Ojukwu
said.
He also said the programme had been
planned to last beyond his demise even
as he bemoaned Nigerians who are in
the habit of wasting food items as there
are millions of Nigerians who still go to
bed hungry every day.
Consequently, Marian Soup Kitchen has
taken upon itself to feed 9,000 mouths
every week. Its sustainability remains a
huge test to the aspiration of the
Catholic Priest to serve humanity in good
and bad times.
“If you can’t feed the poor, employ them
in factories to work,” Ojukwu,” Ojukwu
added.
When asked, he said the motivation
behind the gesture was his belief that the
world is a family of God and he was
convinced too that he could assist the
government to uplift the poor. “The main
objectives of the programme is the love
of humanity; I don’t want to see people
suffer. God has blessed me, why
shouldn’t I help others? It pains me to
see people begging and suffering.
“If you go round hotels in Nigeria, you
will see large quantities of food wasted.
It is also sad to see how some rich
people in Nigeria waste money. If only
they could have an industry or
something that will uplift the people, it
will be wonderful and that is why I was
motivated to see how I can make people
happy, especially the poor.
“I love Aliko Dangote though I haven’t
met him because he is using his money
to establish a lot of industries and once
you establish companies, you are feeding
a lot of families whether you know it or
not. Some of our people who are getting
the money either from government or
elsewhere only siphon and launder it
outside the country. The countries
having the money are using it to develop
their places and we are here dying of
poverty in the midst of riches and
wealth,” he lamented.
Speaking on how he gets money for the
project, he said, the seed funds were
raised from the series of books he had
written and movies staged in
collaboration with some Nollywood
actors.
“We made a movie which was launched
in Abuja and about N40 million was
realised in a day. The board of directors
also added and we were able to get the
seed fund to start the project.
“I have great faith in God and I am
convincedhat God will always provide for
his people. When I finally get started
fully, people with big industries,
especially food companies and hotels will
be approached to pass to us what they
cannot use but still edible. We shall also
approach bottling companies and
breweries to give us drinks that they feel
they cannot distribute before their
expiring date. Here we can consume
them in a day.
“We also intend to approach the Nigeria
Customs Service for help. We want to
plead with them to give us some of the
seized food items from importers who try
to circumvent the law of importation.
Instead of destroying some of the food
items, our kitchen could make use of
them by feeding the masses with it,” he
pleaded.
He said, as long as there are hungry
people in Nigeria, the place would remain
opened.
“This place does not belong to anybody
even me and my brothers and sisters
and if I pass away today, no one in my
family can lay claim to the project
ownership. It belongs to God and
humanity,” he stated.

ISL behesds Syria troops and US aid worker. -Aljazera.
A video has been circulated online purporting
to show members of the Islamic State of Iraq
and the Levant (ISIL) group beheading several
Syrian soldiers and a US aid worker.
The footage, released on Sunday, showed the
beheading of at least 12 people whom ISIL
said were pilots and officers in Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad’s military.
The clip was circulated through credible
social media accounts that have previously
shared similar videos that were later verfied,
Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from
Baghdad, said.
But it is not yet possible to verify the
authenticity of the footage, Khan said.
“To Obama, the dog of Rome, today we are
slaughtering the soldiers of Bashar and
tomorrow we are slaughtering your soldiers.
And with god’s permission we will break this
final and last crusade,” a masked man said
before he was shown beheading one of the
men.
The video also showed a bloodied head on
the ground, whom ISIL said was that of US
aid worker Peter Kassing.
“This is Peter Edward Kassig, a US citizen of
your country. Peter, who fought against
Muslims in Iraq, was serving as a soldier in
the American army, does not have much to
say,” a masked person standing near the
head said.
“His previous cellmates have already spoken
on his behalf.”
Khan said: “Peter had converted to Islam. He
is a Muslim who died in the hands of
Muslims. So it is a pretty controversial
statement coming from ISIL.”
Kassig, a 26-year-old from the US state of
Indiana, converted to Islam and changed his
name to Abdul-Rahman Kassig.
The White House said the US intelligence
community was working to determine the
authenticity of the video.
If the video is authentic, the White House
would be “appalled by the brutal murder of
an innocent American,” National Security
Council spokeswoman, Bernadette Meehan,
said.
Kimberly Halkett, reporting from Washington,
said: “Peter’s family has released a
statement, saying that they are in contact with
the US government to understand if the video
is authentic or not. They asked the
international news media not to broadcast or
publish any material provided by the hostage
takers.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron said he
was “horrified” over the video.
“I’m horrified by the cold-blooded murder of
Abdul-Rahman Kassig,” Cameron wrote on
Twitter on Sunday.
“ISIL have again shown their depravity. My
thoughts are with his family.”
Two US journalists and two British aid
workers had already been beheaded by ISIL
in what the group says are retaliatory killings
for the US-led air campaign against its
fighters in Iraq and Syria.
Later on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for
Human Rights, said, in Syria’s al-Raqqa city,
ISIL executed al least 13 men, who were
arrested earlier this month after they were
charged of collaborating with the Syrian
regime.
The London-based rights group said,
according to local sources, the Syrian
nationals were arrested about a month ago,
adding that ISIL found individual weapons
and wireless devices in their possession.
ISIL has executed numerous Iraqis and
Syrians. In October, the group publicly
executed Iraqi news cameraman Raad al-
Azzawi and three civilians in northern Iraq,
according to the journalist’s relatives.

said rescue operation was in progress.

people who might have died or injured in the

I love tall and confident men-Genevieve Nnaji
Veteran Nollywood actress — Genevieve
Nnaji has marriage on her to-do list to the
relief of most of her fans.
Unarguably one of the most eligible
bachelorettes in the country, Genevieve
spoke about what guides her preferences
when it comes to relationships while
speaking with Olisa Adibua on his weekly
show, The Truth.
‘I’m that person who eats with her eyes, I
have to be attracted to you but at the end
of the day it’s your mind that I am going
to fall in love with, so there is something
that draws me close to you and
something that keeps me,’ she said.
Continuing, the Half of A Yellow Sun star
said: ‘I’m looking for a friend who shares
a like mind and someone who is
confident. I like tall guys, I’m short so
you have to think of the kids.’
Asked if she thinks men may be
threatened by her success, her reply was
straight and sharp: ‘Then he is a baby,
I’m not looking for a boy. Men don’t let
artificial things like that intimidate them.’
Guys are no longer innovative when it comes to Romance- Waje Iruobe
The RnB diva, Waje Iruobe, popular for
her hit song, recently showed her
romantic side when she took to her Instagram
page to give romance tips to guys, saying
guys are no longer innovative when it comes to romance.
"God, guys has got no
game going for them anymore. What
happened to being innovative in romance?
Now romance is all about popcorn and ice
cream with movie.
Be innovative guys, Paris isn’t too far or a
rooftop dinner. That’s romance,” she advised.
Sexual Harrastment makes me to abandoned acting for a while- Sotayo Sobola
Sexual harassment
is everywhere, not just in Nollywood, it
happens everywhere even in Churches and
Mosques. It now depends on you to make a
decision if you want to buy into it or not.
Yes o, except I want to lie. That was a long
time ago, like in 2004; it has happened to me
before but I’m not going to mention names. I
know one day I’m going to run into that
person and look straight into his eyes again
I’ll give you an example. You’ve been cast for
a role, you’ve been given the role and the next
thing you hear is: ‘If you know you can’t come
and meet me in my hotel room or come and
date me then you should bring back my
script’. It was part of the reason why I
stopped acting English movies. I just stopped
acting and went to complete my education. I
had a diploma in Law from Lagos State
University and got my first degree in Public
Administration from Onabisi Onabanjo
University. Because of sexual harassment I
just stopped everything that had to do with
entertainment. I was so discouraged.
You’re being casted for a role and because
you refused to sleep with a producer or
something, next minute you won’t even know,
you’ll just hear that they’ve started shooting
the job or they ask you to bring back the
script for someone else.

I will shoot you and nothing will happen-Sambo's police guard tells AIT journalists on their way to cover Tambuwal's programme.
Journalists on their way to cover the
presentation and acceptance of the
presidential expression of interest and
nomination form of the Speaker, House of
Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal,
narrowly escaped being shot as they were
attacked by the security details attached to the
Vice-President, Namadi Sambo yesterday.
The Nation reports that a convoy of the
reporters was attacked at Aso Drive junction
(close to the Three Arm Zone) as the Vice
President, who was on his way back from
Jumat prayer at the National Mosque, passed
the junction.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)
Buba. K, triggered the attack when he ordered
the arrest of Mr. Emman Ovuakporie, who is a
Senior Correspondent with the Vanguard
newspapers, claiming that the reporter beat a
security cordon mounted by the security
details of the Vice President.
Buba could not be convinced that one of the
mobile policemen attached to the VP’s
security convoy passed the journalist’s car.
Other journalists passing packed their cars
and protested the undignified manner in which
the policemen were manhandling the reporters,
which caused a sizable gathering.
The Vice President’s security details were
further annoyed on learning that the reporters
were on official assignment to cover the
presentation and acceptance of the
presidential nomination form by the Speaker,
Aminu Tambuwal.
A mobile policeman, Corporal Ayubu Ayefu
threatened to shoot a cameraman with Africa
Independent Television (AIT), Femi Akinpelu, in
an attempt to disperse the protesting
journalists.
The Corporal (Ayubu Ayefu) pointed his
cocked AK 47 rifle at the AIT cameraman as
he attempted to film the incident.
“Look at my name tag; nothing will happen. If
you don’t leave this place immediately with
your camera and your vehicle, I will shoot you.
Now move!”, the corporal ordered.
A senior Department of Security Service (DSS)
operative saved the day when he witnessed
the scene and alighted from his vehicle.
He appealed to the irate DSP Buba to release
the detained journalist.
He said to Buba: “I came down because I
recognised your face. Your boss was my
classmate in the university, and I want to let
you know that you are biting more than you
can chew here”.
The detained reporter was eventually released
by the Vice President’s security details after
appeals from many quarters.
Charles Novia has incurred the wrath of Chika Ike's PA, Serah Donald.
Movie director turned celebrity critic, Charles Novia, has incurred the wrath of Chika Ike's PA, Serah Donald, for saying that Chika is a show off.
PULSE NEWS
Movie director and producer, Charles
Novia » 's new career as a celebrity critic is
surely drawing more enemies for him than friends.
The top producer who now run a blog where
he picks on the nuances of Nigerian
celebrities and tears them to pieces, has had
many of the stars battle him anytime he fires a
salvo at them. He has had issues with
actresses like Rita Dominic, Genevieve Nnaji,
Ini Edo, Tonto Dikeh, and Cossy Orjiakor, as
well singers Tiwa Savage » and Maheeda,
over stuff he wrote about them but he cares
less as he keeps pointing out their faults.
This time around, he has seemingly touched
the sour side of touring actress, Chika Ike,
who has been going from one country to the
enjoying life and posting photos of her
exploits all over the place.
Charles Novia sees her flaunting photos of
the hotel she stays and the yacht she is
holidaying in as vain and egotistical.
In a funny soliloquy on his blog, Novia wrote:
"Let me give an example with that Chika Ike.
She is an actress or something? Yeah? How
is it that she sorts of ensures that the whole
Nigeria must know that she paid $24,000 for
a two-day yacht ride in the Middle East?
Isn’t that some sort of dysfunction of her
faculties?
‘But I read that it was her Personal Assistant
who wrote effusively on her personal page
that Chika paid that amount and took her,
the PA or friend, along for the ride.
It all boils down to my point. And by the
way, that picture I saw of the yacht is
suspect. The damned thing looked like a
cruise boat which the obtuse PA might have
mistaken for a yacht though. Anyway, my
point is, in this clime we live in, our so-
called celebrities, coming from a
background of social, material and
emotional deprivation, just have to FORCE
the public to know that they have arrived.
So, a boat trip, a helicopter ride, a breakfast
in a 3 star hotel lobby and a personal
scratch on the ass must make the news at
all costs."
But the Chika Ike camp would not take
such frontal attack lying low as her Personal
Assistant or Manager, as she calls herself,
Serah Donlad, fired back at Charles Novia,
calling him all sorts of names.
"Ah hh Charles Novia. Why the beef? I
understand your pains that after years spent
in the industry you have nothing to show for
it and have resorted to getting fame with
celebrities names. Oh well! let me grant you
the audience of having your fifteen minutes
fame as usual.
Trying to resurrect your dead career by
trying to be a critic or will I say a hater.
Before you hate why not at least do a proper
research. First you called a yacht, a cruise
boat. I laughed at first but I understand that
you have not experienced the luxury of
being in a Yacht to know the difference
between a boat and a yacht. You called
Jumeirah beach hotel a 3 star hotel? my
guy I forgive your ignorance ,how will you
know the difference when you have not
even been in a two star hotel how much
more a five star hotel.
You call me Chika Ike's personal
assistant ,that really got me laughing hard
because I know that you know I am her
manager and her publicist a position you will
give your life to attain at lease to make
some money for your self and take expense
paid trips vacation.
I remember clearly that you met me in
California when you came for Nollywood
convention. And I was in a film school one
you won't even be able to afford even if you
worked for years but then again I forgive
your ignorance as I deeply feel your pains.
Dealing with a dead career is not really an
easy one.
But one advice focus on resurrecting your
career and going back to being a movie
director rather than living your life hating on
celebrities who has made it. It's obvious
your beef doesn't pay your bills and you will
die a wretched sad old man who will be
remembered for hating on celebrities. Like
the famous saying goes. Have you ever
seen a statue erected In honor of a critic ?
NO!
Chika Ike is one of the biggest Nigerian
celebrities we have, a U.N ambassador,
bullet energy drink ambassador. Refugee
ambassador for displaced person just to
mention a few. An extremely hardworking
one as such and very charitable, I am sure
you are aware of how many lives she has
changed with her Chika Ike foundation.
Chika Ike is blessed and no man can take
that away. She is 28 and successful and
she's sure going to live her life to the fullest
so feel free to feed your eyes with more
Instagram pictures if it pains you then go
work harder and be celebrated. Peace out!"

The man has slept with a thousands girls. ...Mick Hucknall
Mick Hucknall has confirmed a notorious claim
that he slept with 1,000 women.
Asked if the rumours were true, the 54-year-
old singer, who has sold more than 60million
records said: “It probably is. I’ve not denied
that, but I never claimed it. I never bragged
about it. I don’t keep count.
“I’ve no idea, but I would think over a 25-year
period that’s probably reasonable to say.
But do I want to say it? No. It’s not what
makes me tick. I don’t put chips on the
bedpost.” Talking ahead of a 30th anniversary
reunion of his band Simply Red next year, he
added: ‘It’s like kids in a candy store. You
can’t believe it. There’s girls chasing you all
the time – it’s incredible.
“When you’re 24 you don’t give a toss. You’re
invincible. You can do anything. Your mind is
set in a way that the world is just ready and
you’re just going to take it all. You’re just
going to have a grand time.”
Hucknall formed Simply Red in 1985 and their
hits include Holding Back the Years and Stars.
After more than 30 top 40 UK singles and two
US No 1s, they split up in 2009. Born into a
working class family in Manchester, Hucknall
began singing at the age of four and held his
first gig when he was just six.
“I was singing all the time. I used to sing for
the girls,” he said. “I feel very blessed
because I grew up in what was effectively a
British musical renaissance.
“The Sixties and early Seventies, to me, mark
an era that is unsurpassed in British music.”
He dropped out of grammar school at 16 after
struggling with bullies who singled him out
because of his bright red hair. Being accepted
at an art school proved to be the turning point
for him and after two years at a further
education college and three at a polytechnic,
he emerged with a 2:2 degree.
He said it was a disappointing result that he
blamed on departmental politics. While
studying he formed a punk band called The
Frantic Elevators, playing their first gig in
1978.
Hucknall drifted away in the 1980s to set up
Simply Red. Their record Stars, released in
1991, was the best-selling album in the UK for
two years running – and remains joint sixth
highest of all time.
Culled from Daily Mail
And behold Tinubu dumped Buhari for Tambuwal.
Several other factors were taken into
consideration by the Tinubu camp in switching
support, close associates of the political leader
disclosed to Saturday Vanguard. Among the
other factors was the alleged overbearing
influence of some close associates of Gen.
Buhari, who they claimed were likely to fence
out other political stakeholders in a possible
Buhari presidency.
Three former heads of state, two from the
north and one from the south and a very
influential retired army chief from the northeast
who has also held political appointments in the
present dispensation were among those cited
by sources as having prevailed on the Tinubu
camp to drop support for Buhari.
The decision of the Tinubu camp to drop
support for Buhari, it was learnt, also followed
reservations from some sections of the north
notably, some Islamic leaders.
“It is not that we dumped Buhari, the Islamic
clerics, the imams and the political leaders in
the north particularly three former heads of
state said that they don’t want the man,” the
source said.
“There is this perception about Buhari that he
is surrounding himself with some people like
Nasir El-Rufai, Buba Galadima, Sule Hamman”
the source said, reawakening complaints
about the overbearing attitude of Buhari’s now
dissolved political machine, The Buhari
Organisation, TBO which had in the past been
accused of selectively fencing out people.
The Tinubu associates also feared that the
perceptions of religious extremism which the
ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP
had sought to tag on Buhari could deny the
party votes in the South were he to emerge as
candidate.
Though many of the Tinubu associates do not
regard him as an extremist, but the perception
already created, it was learned, could be
injurious to their political outing. There were
also concerns that Buhari could be detached
from responsibility and reference was made to
his past roles as head of state and chairman
of the Petroleum (Special) Task Force, PTF
where his subordinates usurped authority in
his name.
“When he was head of state most of the
power was delegated to Idiagbon and when he
was at PTF, it was another person, that took
charge and that if APC says they are looking
for change that Tambuwal represents that
change,” an associate of Tinubu revealed.
Another factor that was taken into
consideration which was projected by some
associates of the APC national leader,
Saturday Vanguard learned was the prospect
of Buhari turning on Tinubu and others once
he is invested with power.
“There are also fears in Asuwaju’s camp that
the man may destroy Asiwaju and may come
back to hurt him and some of Asiwaju’s
loyalists warned him,” the source revealed.
Why I showed my boobs instead of my bra at Halloween-Cossy Orjiako
Controversial actress cum singer, Cossy
Orjiakor, who seems to derive pleasure from
flaunting her God-given gifts in the open, is at
it again. This time, she is in the news as a
result of her daring presence in the just
concluded Halloween held in Lagos recently.
The sexy actress, who went to the event bra
less, told Matinee why she chose not to wear
bra to the event. Hear her, “Actually, a friend
of mine and her husband invited me to the
event and I decided to go with one of my
craziest costumes which I have not worn for a
long time.
The top has a very tiny hock in the chest and
if I should wear bra, my bra will be exposed.
So, I decided to show my boobs instead of
my bra. I think people would prefer to see the
boobs instead of bra. You, which one will you
prefer to see?” she asked our reporter.
“The funny thing is that, the very first time I
stepped out bra less, I got pips freaking out.
Everybody wanted to have pictures with me.
Then I got bitten by the Egyptian vampire,
these boobs are simply amazing, bra less in
Halloween” she added.

Court lifts ban Abalaka HIV Vaccine.
A Federal High Court in Makurdi on Friday
lifted a government ban on the use of HIV
vaccines produced by a Nigerian doctor,
Jeremiah Abalaka.
The court, presided over by Justice Binta
Nyako, also restrained the Federal
Government and the National Agency for
Food and Drug Administration and Control,
NAFDAC, from further interfering with the
use of the vaccines.
Mr. Abalaka, an Abuja-based medical
practitioner, had challenged NAFDAC for
banning him from using the vaccines he
discovered in 1999 for the treatment and
prevention of the deal Human Immuno
Deficiency Virus, HIV.
The therapy, which generated controversy
for years in Nigeria, was banned by the
Obasanjo administration.
Joined in the suit were the president of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria and the
Attorney General of the Federation.
Testifying before the court, Mr. Abalaka,
who also called three witnesses, said he
discovered a recipe to turn the virus in the
infected blood of HIV infected person into
both preventive and curative vaccines.
He said he applied for the patent of the
discovery and was granted on July 22,
1999.
“I wrote to health institutions and
authorities in Nigeria to draw their
attention to the discovery to collaborate
with me to test and confirm the
breakthrough,” the doctor said. “This was
in order to bring succour to sufferers of
HIV but the letters were ignored.’’
Mr. Abalaka said the National Institute for
Pharmaceutical Research and
Development, NIPRD, took him up on the
discovery and confirmed the potency of the
drugs.
“This was done through a report on Feb 28,
2000, but the Federal Government
discontinued further collaboration with me
and the institute,” he told the court.
He disclosed that various agencies of
federal government, including its hospitals,
had purchased the vaccines from him and
applied them on their own patients who
had HIV and many were cured.
“When the FG discovered that the vaccines
were potent, it sent agents to me with the
sum of N10million for the breakthrough to
be announced in Atlanta Georgia, USA, but
I refused,” Mr. Abalaka said.
Mr. Abalaka said his vaccines were then
banned from being used for the treatment
of HIV epidemic in Nigeria by NAFDAC.
His counsel, Mr. Paul Omale, had urged the
court to determine whether the defendants
had justified their banning the vaccines
and “sentence about 3.5 million Nigerians
to death’’ while there was effective and
safe vaccines to cure them.
Mr. Omale further urged the court to
determine whether the defendants had
shown any harmful side effect of the
vaccines.
Counsel to the defendants, Uche Ezekwesili,
however, abandoned their plea as he could
not call witnesses to justify the ban.
Delivering the landmark judgment, Justice
Nyako said since there was no cure yet for
HIV, it was only fair for the defendants to
have allowed the plaintiff to use the
vaccines on infected persons with their
consent.
