News coming from Damaturu, Yobe State,
suggests that the capital is under attack.
According to Leadership, the heavy attack involved
shooting and explosion and was launched
around 6:30am.
The terrified residents of the town were forced to flee in
fear for their lives.
One of them identified as Malam Abdulmalik disclosed:
“As I am talking to you now, we are in serious
confusion now, gunshots and explosions everywhere
especially from the southern part of the city and people
are fleeing.”
Another escaping local narrated that they had been
woken up by multiple gunshots and blasts adding that
the attack might be the work of the dreaded Boko
Haram sect.
A resident, who pleaded for anonymity, said:
“We are running for our lives…we are under attack…
We don’t know where to hide, the shooting is all
over….”
Premium Times also reports on the issue saying that the
insurgents have apparently beseiged the town.
One Damaturu, Yaya Haruna, said:
“It is as if they have surrounded us all here; there is
sound of explosion and serious shooting. We are all
lying down on the floor with our families ; please pray
for our safety, that we survive this… “
An official SSS source from Maiduguri confirmed the
attack with a text message reading: “Damaturu may be
under attack now”.
The Nation correspondents was in the epicenter, having
been run out of his house in Jerusalem area along with
other thousands of residents. He said he heard
5deafening explosions.
According to Sahara Reporters the gunmen, who have
already attacked schools and mobile police base, are
heading for the government house with the aim to seize
the capital.
It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan
has recently requested for another extension of
emergency rule in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states.
However the move was not warmly and unanimously
accepted in the National Assembly.
